When you enter the U.S., Customs will request your:

       1) pilot's license

       2) aircraft registration, and

       3) medical certificate

Medical:  Be certain that your medical is up-to-date.  Customs reports any discrepancies to FAA immediately.

Insurance:  Proof of Insurance has never been requested in the Islands but was required for entry into Cuba and Central American countries like Belize and Guatemala.  As a precaution, it is recommended that you carry with you a copy of your summary coverage page,  liability coverage and your geographic coverage.

Most insurers provide coverage for "the U.S., its territories and possessions, Canada, Mexico, the Bahamas, the islands of the West Indies and Central America, or while enroute between these places."

Mexican law requires that all aircraft flying in Mexico have liability insurance. Most policies do cover Mexico but be certain to check your own policy.  The Mexican Aeronautical Information Publication defines the requirement more clearly (GEN 1.2-4 section 4.5.1.c) and states that liability insurance on foreign aircraft issued abroad is valid in Mexico provided:

  1. The policy specifically covers you in Mexico. This should be clearly stated in the geographic coverage section of the policy.
  2. The policy has liability coverage equal to 56,900 days of minimum salary in the metropolitan area of Mexico City (Distrito Federal). This comes out to approximately $250,000 USD.
  3. That you furnish a photocopy to the DGAC at your first airport of landing in Mexico for validation.

You are not required to obtain a copy of your insurance coverage in Spanish.  Politely resist any efforts by your insurance company to purchase additional coverage.  Highlight "Mexico" and the liability amount in your policy with a marker to show the Mexican authorities if asked.
